Climate change, energy use and food security are the main challenges that our society is facing nowadays. The impact of carbon dioxide on the earth´s climate forces us to investigate possibilities for using sustainable energy resources. One potential approach to address this problem is to recycle CO2 for fuel- or chemical-production using photosynthesis. Photosynthetic organisms use solar energy to incorporate atmospheric CO2 into organic molecules. Therefore, photosynthesis not only prevents climate change, the produced biomass also provides food and feed, and even can be used in technical processes to gain valuable products and biofuels. Algae and cyanobacteria are the most productive photosynthetic organisms on Earth and therefore regarded as promising feedstocks for the production of biofuels, higher value compounds, biofertilizers, food or feed.

The conference “From Photosynthesis to Industrial Applications” merges two congresses dealing with important questions for a sustainable future. The Nordic Photosynthesis Congress (NPC) typically takes place every second year, the Nordic Algae Symposia (NAS) was initiated in 2018 by the Nordic Center of Excellence “NordAqua”, a hub of 10 Nordic universities and research institutes from 3 different Nordic countries along with several industrial and societal partners.

Choosing Umeå as conference site for From Photosynthesis to Industrial Applications therefore opens the unique opportunity to combine the expertise of two research areas into one merged conference, to enhance interdisciplinary discussions, create new networks and to enhance future research. The proposed three-day conference will bring together excellent teams from academia and industry, and focuses on advances of photosynthetic organisms ranging from cyanobacteria, micro- and seaweed to higher plants. Five of the conference sessions will be common to both conferences, meanwhile five will be parallel specialized to either basic photosynthesis or industrial applications of algal research. The conference participants can freely choose, which session they attend.
