State of housing in the nordic countries:
Navigating construction in a climate of rising costs, surging demand, and high ambitions

The Nordic countries, like the rest of Europe, are redefining what it means to achieve “a good build.” This shift considers factors such as the environmental impact of construction and renovation, the social implications, and the functionality of buildings—including health features and accessibility—sometimes at the expense of affordability. This year’s State of Housing Report examines the key challenges facing the Nordic construction sector compared to other markets and explores whether these insights can help curb rising costs, complexity, and rigidity.

To build or not to build

During our century, we will need up to 2 billion new homes. Simultaneously, emissions from the built environment should be reduced by 80-90%. How we manage to solve the conflict between strongly growing construction needs and emission reductions is one of the defining factors in our efforts to mitigate the climate change. Therefore we must dare to face both difficult questions, as well as promote value-based decision making.
