Hotell
We have recommended the Clarion Hotel, but feel free to book another one if you like. Umeå is a small town, so all hotels in the city center are in walking distance. .
To get from the airport to the hotel
Taxi: Around 300 SEK and takes about 15 minutes.
Bus: 80 SEK, get of at the “Vasaplan” stop. From there, it is a 700 m walk to the hotel.
To get from the hotel to the conference venue
It is a 45 minutes walk through the city to the conference venue. The most scenic route is following the river downstream (southwest) for about 2 km then turn left and walk up the escalators and walk through the east railway station (Östra Station) to the campus.
You can also take the bus from Vasaplan (30 SEK single fare). Either take line 2 towards “Östra Ersboda” or “Ö Ersboda”, line 5 towards “Strömpilen” or line 8 towards “Tomtebo” and get off at “Växthuset” (approx. 10 min ride). UPSC will be on the left side of the road, a yellow brick building with a greenhouse on the roof.
Getting to Umeå
Umeå is reachable from Stockholm Aranda airport. Two airlines fly to Umeå from Stockholm: SAS and Norwegian. If you take an international flight, you must change terminals at the airport. Either get a connecting flight or count on two hours in Stockholm to change flights.
Umeå can also be reached by train. From Stockholm or Arlanda airport, it takes 6 hours by train, or you can take a sleeper train that arrives in Umeå in the morning. Train tickets must be ordered in advance.
Other practicalities
Most meals will be served in close to the conference venue.
The “gala” dinner will be served downtown, close to the hotel, at a floating restaurant on the river Sjöbris.
All shops take international credit cards – no need to change to Swedish krona.
Bus tickets are easiest to buy using the bus company app (Apple or Android) (https://www.tabussen.nu/ultra/english/). You can also purchase 24- or 72-hour tickets. You pay using a credit card within the app.
Alcohol is expensive in Sweden and can only be purchased in restaurants, bars, and a special shop.
Umeå is a small municipality of 130,000 people, of whom slightly more than half live in the town. It is dominated by the university and the university hospital. Most students return after summer vacation on the weekend after the meeting.
Umeå Plant Science Centre is the largest center for experimental plant science in Sweden or Northern Europe, with more than 30 research groups.
