Conference support grant
The Population Commission of the IGU will provide a support grant for this conference up to the maximum value of £1,500 (pound sterling). The aim of the conference support grant is to enable an individual to attend the conference in Umeå, Sweden, who faces contextual challenges of obtaining the required funding to attend the conference. The conference support grant can be used for travel, accommodation, and conference registration fees. To be eligible for an application to the scheme, applicants must have had a paper accepted for the conference. Applications will be reviewed by the organizing committee of the conference. The deadline for submission of applications is 20 November 2024. The decision will be made before the end of December, and applicants will be informed of the decisions before 14 January 2025.
Applications will be assessed according to three main criteria:
1. Benefits gained from attendance at the conference: How will attendance at the conference support the progression of your career?
2. Financial need for support: Why are funds being sought to attend the conference?
3. Letter of support from Head of School/Department or sponsor.

Information about Umeå
Umeå is situated on the inlet of the Baltic sea at the mouth of the Ume river, about 600 km north of Stockholm and about 400 km south of the Arctic Circle. With its more than 130 000 inhabitants it is the largest city of Norrland and currently one of the fastest growing cities in Sweden. Umeå is also known as the City of Birches with its large population of just birches.
Umeå hosts two Universities (Umeå University and one of the three branches of the Swedish Agricultural University) and a University hospital; the around 40,000 enrolled students correspond to around 30% of the total population.
Umeå University (Swedish: Umeå universitet; Ume Sami: Ubmeje universitiähta) was founded in 1965 and is the fifth oldest within Sweden's present borders. Internationally, the university is known for its highly ranked Institute of (industrial) Design, but also for its tree research. Emanuelle Charpentier and co-workers developed CRISPR gene editing at Umeå University, which was awarded with the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
