Aligners and Orthognat Surgery
After obtaining her dental degree, Prof. Dr. Maria Orellana completed a doctorate (PhD) in Oral Biology and Maxillo-facial Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia in the USA. Her thesis focused on understanding the biology of tooth movement during orthodontic treatment.
She later completed her specialty in Orthodontics at one of the most prestigious Canadian Universities, the University of Alberta. At the same time, Prof. Dr. Orellana pursued a Master of Sciences. Her research focused on understanding and preventing caries during orthodontic treatment.
In 2007, Maria joined the University of California San Francisco as an Assistant Professor of Orthodontics, later becoming Associate Professor and clinic director. She was also a Director and Chair of the Boston University Orthodontic Program in Dubai, UAE.
She is currently a Professor and clinic director of the Orthodontic Program at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) at the Erasme Hospital
Professor Orellana has published extensively in American and International journals and participated in several orthodontics books. She is also an internationally recognized lecturer in orthodontic treatment with clear aligners such as Invisalign. During her career she has trained thousands of doctors across the globe.
The management of surgical orthodontic treatments with clear aligners.
Quite often orthodontic/surgical treatments represent a challenge in coordination and aligning objectives pre and after the surgical procedure. Clear aligners which utilize digital treatment planning can facilitate the treatment outcome in these complex cases. However, this planning requires a global vision and a precise staging of the movements that are unique to clear aligners treatment.
Aims Objectives and learning outcomes
Aims: To deepen the understanding of the unique role of clear aligners orthodontics in multidisciplinary cases.
Objective: This lecture will provide enhanced protocols and staging to treat complex multidisciplinary cases that require orthognathic surgery
Learning outcomes: After this lecture, doctors will confidently plan surgical cases from palatal expansion to bi-maxillary orthognathic surgery.

TMJ Surgery Faculty och European Society of TMJ Surgeons (ESTMJS).

Salah Abbas
The Open bites, Class III discrepancy, Class III discrepancy, tips and tricks and discussion
Salah has graduated from The University of Copenhagen, postgraduate program for Orthodontics. Salah has since been working as an orthodontist both in the public and in the private sector.
1)Clinical teacher and supervisor at the University of Copenhagen, Postgraduate department for Orthodontics: Teaching areas are Biomechanics, skeletal anchorage and growth.
2)The head of the largest central public clinic of Orthodontics in Copenhagen.
3)Orthodontist at the Orthognathic surgery department at Koege regional hospital: Mainly orthognathic surgery, as well as interceptive orthopedic treatments of class III cases with skeletal anchorage.
4)Part time in private clinic
Salah’s greatest passion is Biomechanics and skeletal anchorage, and he uses a great deal of his free time giving lectures nationally and internationally.
Class III:
These clinically oriented lectures have the purpose of offering a new alternative to classic orthognathic surgery in cases of class III discrepancies and developmental anomalies. Children suffering of class III discrepancies are normally facing different skeletal, dental, social, esthetic and functional challenges during their critical growth period. These challenges are affecting patients’ life quality including narrow palate, tongue dysfunction, difficulties in breathing and constricted airway flow, extreme crowding in the upper jaw, ectopic canines and molars, open bites, TMD problems, grinding, asymmetrical mandibular growth, disharmony of the smile and disproportion of the face … etc. These lectures are offering a new philosophy to treat these class III discrepancies by using skeletal anchorage. The results are orthopaedic by advancing the maxillary complex forward and developing the midfacial region. It is more like maxillary growth stimulation or distraction correcting the skeletal discrepancy in all planes, as well as creating space in the dental arch avoiding all these problems mentioned before. It involves dental decompensation and obvious improvement of the facial harmony. Facts about growth mechanisms and most importantly their clinical relevance will be illustrated. Different treatment protocols and appliances will be shown. The material is exclusively from our patients and clinics
The open bites:
The open bite malocclusions and the increased vertical dimension have always been the most difficult cases to treat and even more difficult to retain. A combination of open bite with other malocclusions like narrow maxilla, class II, class III or asymmetry can complicate these treatments or even make them impossible to achieve with traditional orthodontics. Most of these cases end in orthognathic surgery or in compromise with extrusion of incisors. Skeletal anchorage devices have offered a new real alternative to some of these cases. These clinically oriented lectures have the purpose of discussing a promising trend in treating the increased vertical dimension by using skeletal anchorage. The goals of such treatment modalities, as well as the prognoses and the stability are dependent on the etiology and the skeletal age of the patient. To decide the correct treatment modality, then we must understand the etiology. Therefor these lectures will be focusing not only on showing the new trend in treating the open bite cases with skeletal anchorage, but also showing how to find out the cases indicated for this type of treatment versus cases that should be referred to surgery from the start. A better way of predicting the prognoses, retention and stability will be explained. Facts about growth mechanisms and their clinical relevance to the open bite correction will be mentioned. The material is exclusively from our clinics.
