About Umeå, Umeå University and Várdduo – Centre for Sámi research
Umeå, Ubmejen in Ume Sami, is one of Sweden's fastest growing cities. The average age of the 130,000 people living in Umeå is 38 years. The city offers world-class art, theatre, film, industry, music and research. Umeå is called "Björkarnas Stad" - the ‘City of Birches’ because after a major fire in 1888, almost 3,000 silver birch trees were planted along the city streets.

Umeå University, founded in 1965, offers research and education in medicine, science and technology, social sciences, humanities and education. In 2000, Umeå University established a centre for Sámi research, since 1 January 2020 it is called Várdduo - Centre for Sámi Research, in Swedish, and Várdduo - Sámien uhtssademenguovdátje, in Ume-Sámi, respectively.

Várdduo is a hub for doctoral students and researchers from different disciplines within the university. In collaboration with Sámi actors, organisations and society, a positive research environment is created where creative meetings and exchanges of ideas enrich research. Várdduo means ‘a mountain with a view for miles’ in Ume Sámi.
